E3 is still alive…

e3.jpgBut they’ve decided to put their party days behind them… a little less Leia in the metal bikini, and a little more Leia in a respectable, confortable all cotton pantsuit. There are some sad people out there i can imagine. The E3 people announced last week that gone are the days of the massive bright and shinning showroom style event, full of free useless landfill (swag), large breasted women sporting logos for whoever and whatever, and mega screens blasting out demos for all the mega games coming out… sometime.

You know i’ve never been to E3, but this is what i can tell from all the coverage of last years event… If i wasn’t stuck in Vermont, i might not sound so spitefull.

Either way, E3 issued a press release stating:

“to better address the needs of today’s global computer and video game industry, the 2007 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3Expo) is evolving into a more intimate event focused on targeted, personalized meetings and activities.” … “It is no longer necessary or efficient to have a single industry ‘mega-show.’ By refocusing on a highly-targeted event, we think we can do a better job serving our members and the industry as a whole, and our members are energized about creating this new E3,”

Looks to me like they’re trying to put a more mature face on the whole event, save some money and be more exacting on who gets to see what first… wonderfull. maybe Wired will hire me for color commentary for next year. Yay for progress!

Bullet Witch

1153589446.jpgWe’ve all heard the arguement; to much emphasis on visuals, not enough on gameplay and immersion. I for one, am constantly concerned with this trend towards the flashy vacant, and i look forward to seeing what Nintendo’s Wii has in store. But those who opted for the X360, what of their plight?

Well, one possibility may be the upcoming “Bullet Witch” by Japan’s Cavia; you control a witch, third person, who uses…well, bullets. And magic. All that’s available currently for info is their website and a downloadable gameplay video you can find almost anywhere, that looks promising (here’s the youtube.) While at first it appears to be a laura croftesque third person shoot em up, with average character animation and what looks like substandard enemy AI - I also notice there is some excellent physics, amazing magic effects, explosive particle effects, and from the fan groups i’ve been trolling around in, and the brief cinematic intro, a very worthwhile story. Could be worth checking out, we’ll know soon enough.

That’s so Meta…

GameDaily Biz is featuring an article on “How to Become a Better Videogame Journalist” - what they shoud have called it is “How to better remove all your free time, stay up way to late reading about CMI then playing CMI, and be extremely late for work the next day, you chump.” But that’d be too long a digg subject. I guess it’s good as it is.

The article goes on to make some fairly obvious observations, keeping in line with most of the List nonsense that seems to populate the agregators these days. “The top 10 top 10s about top 10’s about navel lint and it’s many shapes and colors.” such as:

Take a writing class: If you’re truly desperate for help, it might be a good idea to take classes in journalism and/or creative writing. At the very least (in theory), you’ll have the opportunity to get advice from a true expert (all bets are off with adjunct professors).

Know how to write. Thanks for the insight professor.

Otherwise the article reads well, albeit smug - spending the last page going into detail on how to avoid having sex with all the many people you may cross paths with as a high falootin’ videogame journalist, after of course, the “ego check” bit about keeping it real and taking the time to hang with the great unwashed masses (aka, unpaid gamer/journalists). Hmm… no ego there.

Either way, it’s an interesting read, if only to get a sense of the emptyness that lies behind the bloodshot eyes of the modern “Videogame Journalist”. Be afraid, be very, whatever.

Zelda Windwaker Betaland Found

zelda_0005.jpgA once hidden easter egg was uncovered inside of Windwaker a while ago; letting players run around in a vaguely pyschedelic world of placeholder textures and bizarre polygons. The intrepid gamers found a total of six different planes the developers used for testing early builds of the game - aparently someone felt it would be a treat to leave these in for us, thanks! Now a video of the world has surfaced over at destructoid, as well as all the codes you’ll need to access the betaland. Enjoy!

Retro Gaming Party
IMG_0925.0.jpgMy friends Athena and Andrea hosted a retrogaming party tonight down at my old studio space on Pine street; I got the word about it from Todd at work and spent the rest of the day excitedly waiting to head down. It’s been a while since i’ve done much console gaming, let alone nintendo, genesis or *gasp* Atari…
I can’t tell you how much fun it is to play these old systems with other people and to hear the stories everyone tells; the hours spent trying to find that one special item, thinking you just beat the game, when actually you have to beat it twice, the second time you have to do it twice as fast. The terrible (yet worthwhile…) toll they took on our free time and family relations….
One of the best moments of the night came when i was going one on one in Ultimate Mortal Combat for the Genesis, and i landed such a severe upper cut that it set the other guy up through the ceiling of the screen, and then caused the whole game to freeze, and display a lovelyIMG_0908.jpg Console version of the “Blue Screen of Death” -
Can i also mention the waves of nostalgia, followed by a gauzy almost sedated sensation that comes with taking out fussy NES carts and going though my elaborate cleansing ritual. pop it up hard and down hard, pull it out, blow out the cart, blow out the box, blow out the cart again, check for dust, put it back in the machine, slam it down, power up. Repeat as nessessary. (did anyone else just get as turned on as i did?) Makes me wonder if that gauzy sensation has more to do with hyperventilation than nostalgia…

East vs. West (rpgs.)

A commonly held distinction is that the Asian-influenced RPG features a pre-determined protagonist, while the Western style leans towards a customized character. The former offers an ability to let the gamer play a greater role in the plot of the game, but the latter is where we can find actual personal involvement and emotional attachment. Sure, on the average customization boils down to a handful of numbers with no inherent meaning, but those are our numbers, and it does imbue the title with a sense of personal investment.

Wouldn’t it be great if we had both?

jap_dice.jpgEdward Pollard @ eToychest has posted part two of his piece on the state of RPG Gaming - It’s an enjoyable read, and the questions he asks are important ones. I myself have always been a much bigger fan of Western RPGs, cutting my teeth with Pen and Paper RPGs, and then moving to computer gaming at a young age. But as i evaluate it more and more, i have to be honnest, i’ve had some of my best gaming experiences, with Eastern style RPGS, FF7 blew me away… Zelda, Dragonquest, Phantasy Star… All of these games featured a fixed main character - i suppose the key element in these is that while the main characters stayed the same you were able to customize his skills, magic, weapons, etc.

In Phantasy Star 3, one of my all time favorite rpgs, you got to choose who you married, for 3 generations! Then you look at games like oblivion, which offer amazing customizability of your character, but you start to notice that reguardless of how you look, or how long your hair is, or what race you choose, your interaction with the world doesn’t change all that much…

Perhaps us westerners just have more of a ego driven desire for autonomy, even if that autonomy is only an illusion? We exchange a potentially more worthwhile gaming experience for the chance to make our avatars more like ourselves - is there a balance we can strike?

The Search goes on…

windows start1.jpgI’m sure i’ll have better luck once proper drivers for MacBook XP come out, but until then i can’t seem to find a game that works properly for my MacBook. If anyone out there has any suggestions i’m all ears. Today i gave the old X-Com series an install, and… well, i don’t even want to get into it. Next on the list is Mechwarrior 3, another classic. We’ll see how well it fares. I’m going to keep my ears to the ground and i’ll be sure to let you all know what i find, be it a game that works, or alternative/updated drivers.

In the meantime, who cares - i got my desktop, and it’s off to Tamriel for a few more hours.

Rebelstar, While we wait for the new X-Com.

rtc1.jpgSome of the guys responsible for X-com have been hard at work on Rebelstar tactical command, a title being released for the GBA. As you might expect, it will play out as x-com lite, focusing on the time unit based, 3/4 top down combat that made the x-com series so popular:

“Because of all the options available to you, these missions offer a multitude of tactics for you to use. Are you having trouble storming some Zorn camping in a hut with only one point of entry? Then use your heavy weapons to blow a hole in the wall and attack from their blind spot but just remember that everything you can do the enemy can do also. Because of all of these options little is left to luck, so failing a level isn’t as frustrating as in most games because its purely down to your ability, if you are stuck then you can try a variety of different strategies from changing you units’ equipment when deploying to attacking from a new direction. “

Still in Oblivion?

TES4-VileLair03.jpgIs the question being asked over at Gamespy, and while they draw their own conclusions, the answer on my end is a resounding “Hells yes!” While i havn’t had as much time lately with “The real world” keeping me tied up, i still drop an average of 5 hours a week traversing the fields and farms of Tamriel. The Article mostly focuses on Oblivion’s initial hang-ups; memory leaks, crashings, broken questions, and the god awefull idea of scaled creature leveling. (no, i’m sorry - this is never a good idea, relativism people!) And whether or not the team at Bethesda were able to correct these issues.

Well; in my opinion they have - for the most part their patches have tightened up the game’s inards; but it’s the Oblivion community at large that have really come through - modding out the game in all ways unimaginable. Bethesda have also come through with some truely excellent content by way of a controversial pay to play module format. Again, i think it’s worth the 2 bucks for my own wizard’s tower.

All said and done, i think Oblivion has only gotten better, will continue to grow and evolve, and will continue to offer fresh adventures to anyone who has enough time to put into it. Now i just have to figure out how to get fired from my day job.
